WORK • Thursday Routine

It’s Thursday morning. What’s the scene at your workplace?
A typical Thursday (when we're shooting Grey's Anatomy) would start early — like, up at 430a early. I would rush to the studio, and try not to sleep through hair and makeup to get to set around 8a. It’s fast and busy, and the hours are long!
What’s on the agenda for today?
Today my workplace is my home (we’re on hiatus). The scene is pretty quiet, my dog Norman sleeps in until 11, about when I come back from the gym. We both have breakfast, take a walk, then I’ll sit on my couch by the living room windows where I do most of my computer work. I’ll be checking in on the editing of a documentary I directed a few years ago, a children’s book I’m currently trying to sell, a show I’m developing, and a movie I’m trying to write. You gotta throw the spaghetti on the wall, see what sticks. It’s been a busy couple of years.
Any restaurant plans today, tonight, this weekend?
Going to Tangaroa on Washington Boulevard. The fish is so fresh, it feels like we’re at a fish market. In fact, they do have a fish market, in the front of the restaurant. I love the neighborhood feel of the restaurant, a true gem.
How about a little leisure or culture?
I like to walk a lot, so does my dog. We mostly go around the Baldwin Hills and Kenneth Hahn parks. It’s such a privilege to be able to walk from my neighborhood straight into these wild and central parks of LA.
Any weekend getaways?
Idyllwild. It’s pretty close to LA, and such a different landscape that a weekend feels like a week. At about two and a half hours, the drive is relatively easy. The town is a cool little spot, frozen in a different, easier time. 10 out of 10 would recommend!
What was your last great vacation?
Thailand for Christmas. We did a lot of visiting, but my favorite part is the north, specifically Chiang Mai. The food, the people, the landscapes, exquisite! Nothing better than getting out of your own little bubble to gain perspective on your own life. I honestly would go back, spend more time up north, and maybe do Laos and Cambodia. I have a fantasy of moving there and starting an artist retreat.
What’s a recent big-ticket purchase you love?
This might be specific to a millennial-or-older crowd, but I so look forward to buying the new Dyson automatic mop. I haven’t gotten it yet because I try to wait for specific moments to reward myself with big purchases. It’s not the biggest of purchases, but most of my disposable income goes to traveling, so I try to keep it reasonable.
What store or service do you always recommend?
I get massages, often! In fact, I feel like you get the best of a massage if you do two or even three in a row. That’s why I’m a big fan of places like Happy Feet, $60 for 60 minutes — so convenient, and guilt-free.
