Butterfly (Culver City)
BARS • First Round
The Skinny: Perched atop the breezy rooftop pool deck of The Shay in Culver City, Butterfly is the more laid-back sister to José Andrés’s Zaytinya downstairs (temporarily closed after a small fire).
The Vibe: Whimsical, with a view. Oversized faux butterflies and lush greenery set the scene, while the peachy-pink interior bar glows with flattering light. Outside, tall potted plants cleverly separate diners from the pool, shielding them from splashing swimmers and evening winds, without blocking the view.
The Drinks: Tequila and mezcal take center stage, complementing the taco-forward menu. The standout Salt Air Margarita is balanced with just the right touch of sweetness, while the gin-and-passionfruit Maracuya is another winner. You’ll also find micheladas, plus beer, wine, and a couple of zero-proof options.
The Food: Serving double duty as a poolside menu and standalone restaurant, Butterfly’s tagline promises “Tacos y Más,” with an emphasis on the más. Guacamole arrives in a hefty molcajete — creamy, lightly spiced, and perfectly bright with lime — while the ceviches are fresh, cooling, and seasonally inspired. Among the tacos, the Pescado Baja California won our table over, though every option we tried was flavorful and satisfying.
The Verdict: For tropical vibes, fresh flavors, and sunset views without leaving the city, Butterfly is a win. –Anna Lane
