It’s Thursday morning. What’s the scene at your workplace?
I’m fortunate that my drive to work offers pretty incredible views. I take Mulholland Drive from Topanga to Malibu, where my office is on property at Calamigos Ranch. I’ll grab coffee at our on-property coffee shop, Gentry Market, before starting the workday.
While many executives have their own offices, I chose to create a communal workspace for my entire team, making it feel very un-corporate. We work at a beautiful wooden conference table, and the whole office has an elegant rustic ranch vibe. I love to walk around, say hello to everyone, and I often get teased for being barefoot.
What’s on the agenda today?
A big part of what we offer members is our social calendar. I’ll start the day by going over it with my team. We host monthly Gentlemen’s Night, Ladies’ Night, and Date Night, as well as a variety of family-friendly events, things like Pizza Making and KidChella. I’ll then sit with Maila, my Director of Membership, and go over packets of potential members I’m going to meet. We’ll then move to the House Bar, where I’ll do member interviews. However, as far as an “interview” goes, it’s truly more of a conversation among friends. We talk about things like family, life, kids, and school, all to make sure that we’re as much of a fit for them as they are for us.
Any restaurant plans today, tonight, this weekend?
Tonight we have a member event, Date Night with Quintessa Wines. Afterwards, my mom will bring my daughter over to join us, and we’ll all go to The Ranch Club, our on-property restaurant, for dinner. The food is amazing — highly recommend the steak frites — and also very family-friendly.
We may also visit BLVD Steak in Calabasas. The owner, Christian Corben, is a member of our club and always takes such good care of our family. Although the restaurant is elegant, it’s a place where we can bring our daughter. Other weekend spots we love are The Landing in Westlake Village for sushi and Boccaccio’s next door for Italian. There’s a grassy courtyard in between where kids can run around. Lastly, if we want a great glass of wine, we’ll head to Endless Color in Topanga Canyon.
How about a little leisure or culture?
We’re members at Calabasas Country Club and will often go to the putting green there, hit and let my daughter run around. This past summer, we also spent a lot of our weekends at Calamigos Beach Club, which is part of the membership. It’s like having a park right off the beach with showers, valet, and good food and drinks. It’s only 12 minutes from the property, right along the PCH.
Any weekend getaways?
Tomorrow we are going to San Ysidro Ranch in Santa Barbara to stay for a couple of nights. My mother-in-law is flying in from Hawaii to join us. She’s taught me a lot about wine so I’m excited for her to experience the restaurant at San Ysidro, Stonehouse, because it has an award-winning wine list.
What was your last great vacation?
My friends Andrew Sandler and Veronika Dash got married over the summer in Croatia, so we planned a trip around it. As a Game of Thrones fan, it was so cool to visit Dubrovnik, where so much of the show was shot. My friends got married at one of the castles from the show.
From there we went to Puglia, Italy, and stayed at an incredible resort, Borgo Egnazia. They had a petting zoo for my daughter, and Flea from Red Hot Chili Peppers also happened to be staying there, and he did a private show for his son and my daughter.
Then we went to Florence and from there to Venice, where we opted to get away from the crowds, staying on Murano instead of Venice-proper. It had a local feel and was completely low-key, with incredibly friendly people. One night, we asked our hotel to make a reservation at the best restaurant they could find us. We took a water taxi to Venice to dine at La Loggia Bistro. I was wearing flip-flops with shorts and a t-shirt (that probably had a stain on it) because it was during a heat wave, and they almost didn’t let me in because of how I looked. However, we ended up bonding with the owners, drinking fantastic wine, my daughter was dancing around, and it was the best food we had in Italy.
What store or service do you always recommend?
Not to sound dramatic, but the team at Evolve Anti-Aging and Wellness in Encino basically saved my life. I had a blood test there, where they advised me on which foods I should and shouldn’t eat. For example, I used to drink a lot of tequila and also often experienced heartburn. I learned from the test that my body is sensitive to agave, and since eliminating it, my heartburn has disappeared. I’ve lost 30 pounds, and I owe it all to them, not to Ozempic, as everyone likes to assume!
Where are you donating your time or money?
Tiffany Haddish is a close family friend, and she runs the charity, She Ready Foundation, to support children in foster care, having come from that background herself. I’ll often team up with her charity. And my sister, Leeron Tal, runs The Circle in Burbank, a women’s empowerment membership club, helping women feel their best, from all aspects of their well-being, physical to mental to emotional. It’s a great community to lend a hand to.
