Brain candy
PATRICK SCHWARZENEGGER • actor • co-founder & CEO, MOSH
Neighborhood where you work: Brentwood
Neighborhood where you live: Santa Monica
It’s Thursday morning. What’s the scene at your workplace?
It’s always packed and usually has a fun, busy atmosphere. In addition to being the office for MOSH — The Brain Brand that I co-founded with my mom, Maria Shriver — the space is also the office for Shriver Media, The Sunday Paper, and a few people who work with the Women's Alzheimer's Movement at Cleveland Clinic (which receives a portion of proceeds from the sale of every MOSH bar). Lately we’ve been doing a ton of sampling and bar testing in anticipation of some new flavors we’re creating to launch later this year.
What’s on the agenda for today?
First, we’re going to make some new content for MOSH’s Instagram and TikTok. Then, we’re going to be drafting messaging about the brand for the employees at Erewhon and Ralphs to help educate them about our brain-boosting protein bars and our overall mission, which is all about supporting physical and cognitive nutrition. We’ll also be going over final designs for the new flavors we’ve been working on, and making some final decisions about what imagery we’ll be using for the packaging.
Any restaurant plans today, tonight, this weekend?
It's my fiancée’s birthday, so we have a packed weekend of food. We're going to Jon & Vinny’s for Italian, then out for steaks the night after (we’re big steak people!). Then I’ll be traveling to New York, Spain, and Germany… so I know I'll be eating a lot of great food very soon.
How about a little leisure or culture?
We like to stay pretty active on the weekends and spend a lot of time outdoors. This weekend is supposed to be nice and sunny, so we’ll probably take our beach cruisers out to the Venice Beach boardwalk, and hopefully hop in the pool.
Any weekend getaways?
We're both working a lot right now, but we try to get to Santa Barbara — which has become a favorite local getaway for us — when we can. The beach is obviously great there, and there’s beautiful hikes and biking. There's a steakhouse there that we love, Lucky’s, and tons of great coffee shops.
What was your last great vacation?
I was in Thailand for seven months [filming season 3 of The White Lotus]. Although it was work, it was also vacation; we got to hop around from Ko Samui to Phuket to Bangkok. We explored the Phi Phi Islands and spent time on some beautiful beaches (including the beach from the movie The Beach).
What’s a recent big-ticket purchase you love?
I don't buy much, but I did get a new car this past year, which was a big one for me. And I bought some new stocks. Honestly… I usually just spend money on stocks!

Glam squad
Dionne Phillips • owner • D’Lashes
Neighborhood where you live: DTLA
Neighborhood where you work: Beverly Hills
It’s Thursday morning. What’s the scene at your workplace?
Today I’ve got seven appointments: a full set for a new client, a surprise touch-up that I managed to squeeze in, a male lash extension client (men love lashes too!), and a lash lift/brow lamination/tint for a UK celeb in town recording. Meanwhile, I’m trying to mentally prepare for my friend’s 50th birthday party tonight — Studio 54-themed, of course. I’ll be rocking a gold suit, fluffy lashes, sparkly eye shadow, and big ’80s hair. I was, like, four back then, but hey, I’m ready to dance!
What’s on the agenda for today?
It’s a full day of glam and gratitude. I’ve got back-to-back clients, some admin in between, and a bit of prep for Monday — my admin and celeb house call day. My days are no joke, but I’m all about the hustle. Coming back from my recent breast cancer journey, rebuilding my life, my spa from scratch during construction delays, COVID, city inspections, Hollywood strikes — you name it — I’ve been through it. But this Thursday? I’m booked. I’m glowing. And I’m so thankful.
Any restaurant plans today, tonight, this weekend?
Oh yes. When I’m not working or hosting my own glam sessions, I’m feeding my vegan soul. My current obsessions:
Crossroads Kitchen: always a classic for vegan fine dining.
Hey Sunshine in Culver City: if you haven’t had the mac and cheese or the Fiesta Bowl, you’re seriously missing out.
Chaumount Vegan: their vegan croissants? Pure joy in pastry form.
And if all else fails, I’m probably sipping something cute and eating my favorite dragon roll plant-based at Planta. You gotta try it!
How about a little leisure or culture?
Self-care is a priority. I love a recovery day at Pause Studio — float therapy or an AI massage is my kind of recharge. If I want human hands, I go to Milk + Honey Spa for a full day of chill.
Any weekend getaways?
Palm Springs is my escape. I love staying at the Kimpton, but I’ve got my eyes on the new Thompson Hotel. Sometimes I stay with my ultra-fab friends — celebrity hairstylists Ted Gibson and Jason Backe — who host like no one else. It’s always fabulous energy, beautiful decor, and all the glam inspo you could want.
What was your last great vacation?
My last dreamy vacay was to Cabo with my husband. We stayed at the Waldorf Astoria Pedregal — it’s our go-to since my best friend got married there years ago. It’s just so peaceful. But next time, I want to switch it up. Maybe the new Four Seasons Cabo San Lucas — or something we don’t even know yet. As long as there’s room service and I can sleep in, I’m happy.
What’s a recent big-ticket purchase you love?
I bought out my Range Rover lease. The way car prices are going, it felt smarter to hold onto something I love. Plus, it fits my boss vibe perfectly and keeps my overhead low. I’m about luxury, but I’m also about smart luxury on a budget.
What store or service do you always recommend?
I swear by Pause Studio for wellness, and Milk + Honey for all-day relaxation. But if you want a mix of glam, peace, and personalized service, you already know the answer — come to D’Lashes. Sip on a frozen rosé, get pampered, and let us craft a lash look that brings out your inner icon.

Getting sauced

It’s Thursday morning. What’s the scene at your workplace?
I’m a freelance stylist, so unless I’m on set for a jean brand the hot girls with Longchamps wore in high school in 2015, I’m working from my mattress on the floor — terracotta tiles. But Thursdays are my leg days. I start my morning at Equinox at 530a and I finish my ab set at 8. I throw on my forest green Pizza Slime Erewhon hoodie, hop in the 3 Series I’ve rented from Sixt, and head straight to Proof Bakery in Atwater Village. My order is always the same: cardamom bun and buckwheat chocolate chip cookie. I used to hate that they put both in the same bag. But then I realized the cardamom sugar rubs off on the cookie, and by the time I sit down to eat it, I have a cardamom chocolate chip cookie.
What’s on the agenda for today?
I just got back from Proof, where today I ordered a chocolate croissant. They said they were out of the cardamom bun when I got there. They said it wasn’t ready the last time I was there. I’m determined to make them admit they don’t make it anymore.
Now, I’m in bed putting together a deck for a sportswear-but-not-sportswear brand. Twelve off-court images of Anna Kournikova. Bottega bag and lilac sweatpants, terrycloth robe and cerulean trainers, velvet track jacket and ScHoolboy Q-esque bucket hat. At 1, I’m going to get lunch with my friend Sodi. It’s either Sqirl, Joan’s, or Clark Street Diner. Today is Sqirl.
Any restaurant plans today, tonight, this weekend?
I don’t cook at home. I didn’t move from the suburbs to a city to do that kind of thing. And I like being a regular at restaurants. It’s fun. It’s social. It feels good when you know a host. A little awkward when you see them on Hinge.
Tomorrow is my birthday, so my girlfriend and I are going to Osteria Mozza. It’s one of my favorite spots in the city. I’ve never made a reservation there. And my order is always the same. Burricotta and spiced walnuts from the mozzarella bar. Grilled octopus salad. Protein for leg day. The potatoes, celery, and green onion — carbs for rowing days. Pappardelle with rabbit ragù because I like a thick, sauced noodle. And the ricotta and egg raviolo because I have an Instagram. I end with the rosemary olive oil cakes and bombolini. Elyssa knows without having to ask.
How about a little leisure or culture?
The last time I drove south of LA, Sascha Zverev got off a private jet and took me to the woodshed in front of every college coach that mattered. But my girlfriend is Balkan, and Novak Djokovic gets closer to retirement every time he slides for a backhand out wide. So we went down to Indian Wells in early March to catch him swearing at his box.
Any weekend getaways?
The only two restaurants in California worth a special journey: Harbor House Inn and Hayato. Neither has three stars, but they should. If I steam enough Field Spec Cotton Heavy Tees this month, I’ll take a trip up to Elk and spend the weekend at Harbor House Inn. Matt Kammerer cut his teeth at Saison, back when the line was a murderer’s row.
These days, most Michelin-starred restaurants have a farm or source from one. If you don’t know this when you book a table, they’ll make sure you do when you sit down. Harbor House has a farm, and you’ll see Matt picking vegetables before service.
He cooks simply. Fire, steam, smoke. His menu changes daily. It says so on the website. Stay for two nights, and you’ll see it’s true.
What was your last great vacation?
I was in Paris for Men’s Week. Just guys in jeans dyed on a rock, placing personal orders for corduroy trousers that mimic tweed before placing store orders for essentially the same zip-up fleece from Rier (for guys with a two-door G-Wagon), Mfpen (for guys who like all the Atelier September butter posts), A.Presse (for guys who print out Noah Johnson columns), and Seya (for guys who like to talk about precise seam allowances at Delicatessen Place).
What’s a recent big-ticket purchase you love?
I sold Nvidia stock to buy a pair of brushed cashmere trousers from The Row. They’re a 32, and I’m a 30, but for the price I paid, I’ll eat enough fett’unta at Mozza to make them work.
What store or service do you always recommend?
I knew nothing about clothes for a long time. And now I know a little. And it’s only because Emily Bode and Aaron Aujla of Bode took a chance on me. I’m forever grateful to them for everything, and highly recommend you check out their stores in LA or New York. The LA store has a gown embroidered with whitework floral patterns, pleats about the waist, and a long row of ivory buttons down the back. If you’ve been dating someone for over five years, and they haven’t yet proposed, I recommend you buy it with their credit card. It’s $15,000.

Ojai there

It’s Thursday morning. What’s the scene at your workplace?
The kitchen is already bustling when I arrive. Pasta is being rolled out. The wood fire is crackling with charred onions for our soubise, the prep cooks are picking tons of fresh herbs, soup flavors are simmering on the stove, and I'm reviewing what needs to be done for our dessert menu.
What’s on the agenda for today?
Thursday is the day I like to make the changes to the menu we've been working on throughout the week at the restaurant. Charred kale with hazelnuts? Lion’s mane mushrooms with green risotto? Dandelion green salad with dates? Today, we’re putting on the new vegetable dishes we added to our wood-fired station. It's also my meetings day. I have weekly manager meetings to discuss shared goals and room for improvement. Very important, not to be missed.
Any restaurant plans today, tonight, this weekend?
My good friend chef Travis Lett recently reopened his restaurant in Venice, RVR, on Abbot Kinney. I couldn’t be more excited to be going. We worked together for six years at Gjelina, and I'm still one of his biggest fans. When the space was called MTN, it was my favorite restaurant in LA.
How about a little leisure or culture?
I loved Doug Aitken's new multimedia artwork, Lightscape, in collaboration with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. He's one of my favorite artists, and has a wonderful creative relationship with my mother Jo-Ann, who's been in a few of his pieces. She’s featured in the new film that’s being shown at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. His immersive artworks are rich and transportive.
Any weekend getaways?
My favorite weekend getaway from Ojai is to drive up the coast to Cambria, a little sleepy beach town on Moonstone Beach. We usually stay right on the beach, at White Water Inn. It's always foggy and there's little to do except walk on the beach, read, and enjoy the fire. Our favorite breakfast spot (known for their organic blue corn waffles) is The Hidden Kitchen, just down the road. It really helps me decompress after a busy week at the restaurant. And a great pit stop on the way up is a delicious lunch at Bell's! On the way back, we always stop at Bob's Well Bread for sourdough bread and great pastries. I just got back from there on Tuesday, feeling rested and excited for the week.
What was your last great vacation?
Martha's Vineyard this past summer in late August. I used to live there and I try to go back every year. The island is a special place for me, and there are so many folks there to visit and rekindle our friendship. Clamming has become an addiction that we do every year. It's meditative in its pace and the full sensory immersion as we plunge our hands into the mud at low tide and root around for those sublime littlenecks.
First, we stop at the cafe 7A Foods in West Tisbury for some generous sandwiches like the crowd favorite Liz Lemon — pastrami on rye with potato chips inside. Mo's Lunch also makes incredible sandwiches to take with you on your day’s adventure. Then we stop at Beetlebung Farm in Chilmark for fresh heirloom vegetables to bring home. With the freshly harvested clams in hand, we always have a big dinner party with enormous steaming bowls of vongole pasta, fresh corn, and summer tomato salads. Swimming, surfing, long beach days, tennis, lobster rolls at Larsen's Fish Market in Menemsha, and all the incredible island farms, I love it all.
If we get stuck with a rainy day, which is often the case with the summer storms, we head into Vineyard Haven for some shopping and food. I used to work with the folks who own Behind the Bookstore Coffee Shop, which is one of the best places to get great coffee on the island, they have a little outpost in Vineyard Haven. Lennox & Harvey is a really cute new boutique, and down the street, grab a book at Bunch of Grapes Bookstore for a great beach read. Last summer we really enjoyed the tacos at the newly opened El Barco Taqueria.

Plunge, rinse, repeat
THOMAS FUKS • founder • 111 Hospitality
Neighborhood/city you live: Hancock Park
It’s Thursday morning. What’s the scene at your workplace?
Thursday mornings at our French restaurant in West Hollywood, Amour, are the calm before the storm; our chefs prep for the big weekend ahead. As morning moves into night, you’ll find co-workers coming for a quick drink by the outdoor fireplace and lounge. Peek inside, and you’ll typically see couples enjoying a romantic candlelit dinner in one of our cozy booths, or in the private dining room, a company dinner or a birthday celebration. While friends trickle into the garden for al fresco dining, some neighbors simply slip in alone for a quick dinner at the bar.
What’s on the agenda for today?
7:30a: I wake up and start with 30 minutes of meditation and stretching outside in the backyard
8a: Go inside to help my daughter get ready for school by cooking breakfast and preparing her lunch, while my wife gets the kids dressed and feeds them
8:45a: We’re in the car, where we listen to 15 minutes of Cinderella (or deep house music) on the way to school
9:30a: Cold plunge and sauna, followed by some calisthenics.
11:11a: Check my phone, emails, and messages, then read managers’ reports and financials of my restaurants from the previous night
1p: Lunch meeting followed by more meetings with my team of managers and chefs regarding the current restaurants and new projects
4p: Probably stuck in LA traffic
5p: Back home, a few phone calls with my restaurant manager and director of operations to catch up on our upcoming openings
6p: Family time with my wife and kids
7:30p: Back to Amour for dinner with a friend
10:30p: Head to Members
1:11a: Back home, finally in bed
Any restaurant plans today, tonight, or this weekend?
I like to go on a lunch date with my wife once or twice a week. We like to go back to the same few places. This week, we’ll probably have lunch at Angelini, which has the best carbonara in town. On Sunday nights, we love to order sushi from Blue Ribbon to enjoy at home after we put the kids to bed.
How about a little leisure or culture?
Since I started working in nightlife, I’ve become extremely picky with music events. I used to go to a lot of different music events a couple times a month. Now I only go to "All Day I Dream" parties and Burning Man. I love to go on a quick hike at Runyon Canyon with the whole family; my two-and-a-half-year-old daughter loves to hike, and my son enjoys being carried on my back! I try to go on a long five-to-eight-hour hike every Monday. Being in nature without my phone resets my mind for the week.
Any weekend getaways?
I was just in Palm Springs with my wife and no kids last Monday (we like going during the week instead of weekends, while no one else is there). We were able to enjoy the silence and read books by the pool. Sometimes we need a break from the chaos of LA and life with two toddlers (plus a third on the way). We often stay at L’Horizon. It’s well designed, plus it has good food, and service is always great. I also try to go to Joshua Tree for every full moon. I have an old camper from the ’80s that I’ve been renovating. I love to park it in the middle of Joshua Tree National Park, hike in the middle of the night, and get lost under the moon.
What was your last great vacation?
During the summer we like to go to the South of France so our kids can spend some time with my family. We rent a car and drive around to discover small, charming villages. (My wife is from Mississippi, so I like to show her the charm and authenticity of French architecture.)
What’s a recent big-ticket purchase you love?
The cedar sauna and cold plunge from Redwood Outdoor that I just bought for my backyard. It’s become a necessity in my routine for my physical and mental health. It changed the way I start my day, giving me the energy to do even more (I splurged for the cedar version, which made my wife happy, since she’s an interior designer, and it’s very aesthetically pleasing).
