RESTAURANTS • Intel

SHAY IT AIN'T SO: While checking out Butterfly, the pleasantly surprising rooftop Mexican restaurant from José Andrés at The Shay hotel in Culver City, FOUND operatives learned that Zaytinya, Andrés’ new Mediterranean restaurant on site, has closed temporarily due to what they’re calling a “small fire.” Representatives at the hotel had no further information as to if and when it might reopen. Reservations remain available on OpenTable starting Aug 1.

WORK • Thursday Routine

Mission control

KWINI REED • founder/co-owner • Poppy + Rose (Downtown) & Poppy & Seed (Anaheim)
Neighborhood you work & live in: Anaheim

It’s Thursday morning. What’s the scene at your workplace?
My workplace is my home office, but my day starts in full mommy mode. So picture this: chaos. Once she’s out the door and off to school, it’s me time. Morning meditation and self-care are non-negotiables, especially since I’ll be peopling all day. After that, it’s mushroom coffee, a ginger shot, and I dive straight into admin mode — checking in with the Poppy + Rose team, since they’re already in service. My sunny home office becomes mission control for a bit before I head out to the restaurant where I act as general manager at Poppy & Seed. No two days are the same, but the rhythm starts at home and ends with feeding people well. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Any restaurant plans today, tonight, this weekend?
If I do sneak in a little me-time, you'll probably find me posted up at Girl & The Goat when I’m in downtown LA, one of my absolute faves. But let’s be honest, most nights, my “restaurant plans” look a lot like the bar top at Poppy & Seed in Anaheim — working, tasting, troubleshooting ... repeat. Because in this business? It never stops!

Any weekend getaways?
My husband Michael is from Ventura, so a quick trip to Ojai to see family (and sneak in a little R&R) is always a treat. If we’ve got a bit more time, we’ll take the Amtrak train to Santa Barbara — easy, breezy, always gorgeous.

We also love a San Diego weekend. Great food, easy vibes. If we’re feeling like a quick change of scenery without a ton of effort? Catalina Island is our go-to for that escape energy without a plane ticket. And speaking of planes, San Francisco is just a short flight away when we need a hit of city life and killer sourdough.

When we’re craving something cozy and outdoorsy, you’ll catch us glamping at Autocamp for an extended weekend. Luxury Airstreams + nature = yes please.

What was your last great vacation?
Are we talking with kids or without? Because I’ve got two answers and they’re both unforgettable. Best trip with Mackenzie? Hands down: New York City. We watched her come alive in that city. From the bright lights of Broadway to museum visits and street food adventures, it quickly became one of her favorite cities, and it’s one of mine, too. Theater, culture, food — what more could you ask for?

Best couples trip? South Korea, no question. Amazing food, warm and welcoming people, and so much to explore. We went in the dead of winter and still had the time of our lives. That’s how magical it is. Whether we were wandering through Seoul’s food markets, exploring historic palaces, or just getting lost in side streets, it was pure gold.

What store or service do you always recommend?
For fashion? ASOS is the go-to for us tall girlies. Well-fitting pants that actually reach the floor? A revelation.
